When I create a new record in the Presentation Repository I cannot key anything in to the "File name" files

The field into which you are keying is also defined in the Presentation Repository with an Entry Type of "Valid Name". This means that the Framework is forcing you to only create things that start with the application prefix. For the Framework itself this would be an 'X'. For applications the allowed prefixes are store in a file called XAPP. For example, look in RNA/XAPP and you will see that the allowed prefix is 'A' but you can add other prefixes also if you wish (apart from X).

If this bothers you, can can change the XPRFILE field in the Presentation Repository to remove the restriction. Attached is a screenshot of the field. Locate it in the PR then change the Entry Type to the value shown. On the first screen of the PR maintenance function you can then click a button called "Refresh cache" and from then onwards you should be able to key anything into the file name field.

Also look here for information regarding keeping your application separate from the RNS Framework:

together with the PDF information available at http://rns.coraltree.co.uk
